241244 - APA Technical Seminars on Shear Walls as High Wind Resistance

Monday PM - First Session: Shear Wall Selection for Wood Framed Buildings. From wall bracing to FTAO, there are many ways to secure the walls of a building. It’s great to have options, but how do you evaluate which is best for a project? As architects and builders, you may be in the dark about this evaluation process being made by your structural engineer and how it impacts your architectural vision and ease of construction. And as an engineer, you may have always gone with the status quo. But what could you be overlooking? This session examines shear wall options along with the pros and cons of each to help building professionals determine and communicate what structural approach is best for your next wood-framed project. Second Session: After the Storm – Lessons Learned about Building for High Wind Resistance. This session will discuss structural failures observed during storm damage assessments and the behavior of wood structures during high wind events. An overview of how high wind forces work, the importance of a complete load path, and how good design and construction practices can improve the storm resistance of buildings will be provided. Both code requirements and APA’s above-code recommendations which contribute to improved overall performance in the structural shell will be discussed. They focus on good connection details and common failure modes seen in storm damage assessments and help builders cost effectively build a safer home. By understanding key code requirements and lateral load concepts, home damage in future storms can be minimized.

Roy Frederick is an Engineered Wood Specialist for APA-the Engineered Wood Association. He is a resource for builders, engineers, architects, and code officials providing training on the use and installation of engineered wood products. Roy is an experienced home builder having worked for over 25 years in all aspects of residential construction, estimating, and design, including code compliance, design changes, and plan performance. He has worked for Brighton Homes, Trendmaker Homes, and most recently David Weekley Homes throughout the major markets of South Central and Southeast Texas, as well as Indianapolis, IN, Denver, CO and Salt Lake City, UT. Roy is based in New Braunfels, Texas and is a graduate of Lamar University.
